HUBBARD

Hubbard residents and those living in the school district are being asked to approve a 4.9-mill school levy May 5.

The five-year renewal levy would raise $1,047,214 annually for the Hubbard School District.

“Our community has been very supportive of our district as a whole,” Superintendent Raymond Soloman said. “We’re very fortunate to have that here in Hubbard.”

The levy funds are used for the district’s general operations such as maintenance, instructional supplies and busing. Soloman said the levy is a renewal, and property taxes would not increase.

Owners of a $100,000 home pay $48 per year from the levy, he said.

The tax issue was introduced in 1987 at 9.9 mills. In 2001, it was split in half into two separate levies.

David Bailey, vice president of Pizza Works in Hubbard and president on the school-levy committee, said he’s optimistic about the issue’s passage.

Bailey said the school has a good teaching staff and test scores. The district also underwent a $56 million project to build three new schools from 2010 to 2012 with 68 percent paid for by the Ohio School Facilities Commission, according to Vindicator files.

“We have a beautiful campus on Hall Avenue,” Bailey said. “I think our school has been run very well.”
