LAKE MILTON

A fundraising event for a 10-year-old Austintown cancer patient is scheduled for July 18 at Lakeside Golf Course, 2404 SE River Road.

Proceeds from the 10th annual Sunshine Benefit Golf Outing will be donated to Emily Orlaski, who was diagnosed in September 2014 with a Wilms’ tumor, a rare kidney disease that primarily affects children. Emily, a fourth-grader at Austintown Intermediate School, is the daughter of Alan and Karen Orlaski of Winter Park Avenue, Austintown.

She receives treatments at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital at University Hospitals, Cleveland, which has included removing her kidney and the attached tumor. Her father said Emily’s prognosis is “good” and she will complete her treatment in May.

Although the family has medical insurance, the cost of co-payments, travel, food and related expenses are mounting, Orlaski said.

A 10-member committee of volunteers works from February to July each year reaching out to the community since 2006 to help cancer sufferers and their families in the Mahoning Valley to defray medical costs. Since then, about $87,000 has been donated to them.

This year, the event is a three-person scramble that includes a continental breakfast and lunch at the turn followed by a steak fry at Magilla’s Sports Bar, 255 S. Meridian Road, Austintown.

The cost is $225 per team and includes food and cocktails. The dinner for those who don’t play golf is $30 for one; $50 for two. The cost of sponsoring a hole is $100 and $50 for a program ad.

At Magilla’s, prizes for hole events, a 50-50 raffle and raffle prizes will be awarded.

The committee also is accepting gifts for a basket auction and monetary donations.
