Ohio workgroup releases report focused on public assistance

COLUMBUS (AP) — A workgroup tasked with studying Ohioans’ reliance on public assistance programs has finalized its recommendations and research on the issue.

The panel’s report released today also contains details from a survey of county job and family services directors, a summary from focus groups with clients and feedback from advocates and others who assist the poor.

In its report, the workgroup of nine county officials cited a need for Ohio to make significant investments to improve transportation, enhance economic vitality and address substance abuse issues. At the same time, the panel said educational and work experience gaps also need attention.

The report comes as state lawmakers debate Gov. John Kasich’s two-year state budget proposal.
