Great Steps Walk set for May 16

The Neurofibromatosis NF Network’s third annual Great Steps4NF Walk is May 16 at Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road. Participants can register online at www.nfnetwork.org.

The Great Steps4NF Walk raises awareness and money for research aimed at finding a treatment and cure for NF, a genetic, progressive nervous-system disorder. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the walk starts at 10 a.m.

Pre-registration is $20 for adults, $25 the day of the event; children 4-10, $12; and 3 and under, $6. Participants who register before April 30 are guaranteed an event T-shirt.

Walkers can either walk as an individual or as a team, and each individual raising $100 or more for the event will have the registration fee waived.

After the event, participants are invited to have fun, food and a chance to meet and chat with others touched by NF.

Weight-management classes offered

YOUNGSTOWN

Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, is offering SlimDown, a six-week weight-management program beginning April 22 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, 1044 Belmont Ave. Classes run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday through May 27.

SlimDown teaches participants to manage their weight by making lifestyle changes with regard to food, physical activity and behavior.

The cost for first-time participants is $40. The cost for individuals who have taken the class before is $20. Mercy Health employees are free. Parking is also free.

Workshop for health at home

WARREN

Mercy Health Youngstown will host a one-hour workshop, Health at Home, from 11 a.m. to noon and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Warren Room at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave.

The morning session runs from 11 a.m. to noon, and the evening session is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The workshop and all materials are free, but reservations are required. Call 330-480-3070.

The workshop includes a reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention.

Health care provider classes

YOUNGSTOWN

Mercy Health Youngstown is offering a full day of continuing education for health care providers from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 21 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

It is free and open to all health care providers. Continental breakfast will be provided by Mercy Health Youngstown; lunch will be provided by Molnlycke Health Care.

Topics include the importance of documentation related to pressure ulcers acquired in health care facilities; the relationship between wounds and nutrition; wound assessment, documentation and treatment options; creation of stoma, etiology and post-op care; men’s health issues; infectious disease and wound care; palliative care for patients with malignant wounds; and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
