April events galore at Munnell Run Farm
Staff report
MERCER, PA.
Munnell Run Farm, 753 Greenville Road, is offering a variety of events and sales this month.
There will be an overstock seedling sale from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at the country store, 24 Avalon Court. Seeds for various native tree and understory plant species remain. Eco-friendly planter boxes crafted of weatherproof poly-lumber made by the wood-shop students at Lakeview High School are also for sale. They often sell at home-improvement stores for three times the cost.
The farm and the Mercer County Conservation District have teamed up with guest artisan Georgia Mosebach for a tole-painting class from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 21 at the farm.
The painting will be a clay pot bird feeder or planter depending on how participants orient their project.
No art experience is required, and all materials will be provided. Cost is $25, and guests must register and pay by Friday. Participants must have previously participated in Mosebach’s “Intro to Tole Painting” class.
Guests who have not yet taken it are urged to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the class. The fee is $30. Call 724-662-2242, and ask for Larissa Cassano or Jacqueline McCullough to register; make checks payable to Munnell Run Farm Foundation, 24 Avalon Court, Suite 300, Mercer, PA 16137.
A wagon-wheel rug-weaving class will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. April 22 with Cyndi Burk instructing. Burk is owner of The Nut House shop and also an artisan who crafts items such as rugs, wreaths, centerpieces and other reinventions of old materials.
During the class, wagon wheels will be used as a guide to make circular rugs out of scrap material. Fleece or wool fabric scraps are not recommended, as they do not rip down as easily as other fabrics. Participants are urged to wait to rip down the fabric until their arrival at the event. Scissors and a J hook also will be used. Cost is $30, and registration is required by next Sunday. Call to register.
The Mercer County Conservation District, with Munnell Run Farm and students from Grove City College, will celebrate Earth Day from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 25 at the farm.
The event will include four stations where guests can learn more about Pennsylvania plants and wildlife on land, in the water or in the air. A special group for young children, pre-kindergarten through second grade, will focus on seeds and soils and will include a tractor-pulled wagon ride to the farm’s woodlot. Environmental Education students from Grove City College will lead interactive group sessions during the morning, with assistance from farm environmental educators Cassano and McCullough.
After the morning sessions, participants will be invited to explore the farm for a wetlands and woodlot cleanup. Dress appropriately for mud; wearing old clothes, gloves and shoes is recommended. A pizza party will follow the cleanup. It is free, but registration is required; call 724-662-2242 by April 21. This event takes place rain or shine.
There also will be a “Pigs and Paint” event, a one-session canvas painting class with guest artisan Lauren Sheridan, from 5 to 9 p.m. April 27.
Sheridan has a bachelor’s degree in art education and a master’s degree in education. The class features advanced painting techniques and requires that participants have taken at least one of her other classes.
Cost is $30. Participants must register and pay by April 24. Call to register. Make checks payable to Munnell Run Farm Foundation.
