Mets reliever Mejia suspended for drug test

ATLANTA

New York Mets relief pitcher Jenrry Mejia has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for the performance-enhancing substance Stanozolol. MLB announced the punishment Saturday. This is the fourth penalty for a positive Stanozolol test reported by MLB in less than a month, following Minnesota pitcher Ervin Santana, Seattle pitcher David Rollins and Atlanta pitcher Arodys Vizcaino.

Mejia began the season as New York’s closer, but he was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with posterior elbow inflammation.

Mejia released a statement through the team saying that he knows the rules and accepts his punishment, but “can honestly say I have no idea how a banned substance ended up in my system.”

Buffalo promotes Oats to replace Hurley

AMHERST, N.Y.

Buffalo has moved swiftly to replace Bobby Hurley by promoting assistant Nate Oats to take over as head coach of its men’s basketball team.

The school announced the move Saturday, two days after Hurley was hired by Arizona State. Oats had spent the past two seasons as an assistant under Hurley and brings continuity to a team that earned its first NCAA Tournament berth last month.

The Bulls went 44-20 under Hurley, including 23-10 last season. Buffalo lost to fifth-seeded West Virginia 68-62 in its NCAA Tournament opener.

Oats is a noted recruiter and responsible for landing junior forward Justin Moss, the Mid-American Conference’s player of the year last season.

Before coming to Buffalo, Oats spent 11 seasons coaching Romulus High School, outside of Detroit.
