Students create boxing exhibit

YOUNGSTOWN

“Youngstown, Ohio Boxing Hall of Fame,” an exhibit created by students from Youngstown Early College, will open at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown, at 6 p.m. April 17.

Former boxing champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, a Youngstown native, will make a special presentation at the event, which is free to the public. The exhibit is in the Drs. Thomas and Maria Fok Exhibit Gallery on the first floor.

In March, students from Youngstown Early College, a program of Youngstown City Schools, began a research project on boxing personalities from their hometown. With the help of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society staff and instructor Dennis Mamone, the 12 members of the self-proclaimed “Youngstown Early College Historical Society” learned that the city had numerous boxing notables, including five world champions, and began to create the exhibit.

Through personal interviews, research and writing, the students dug into the annals of history to tell their story.

The students worked with historical society staff to learn the process of creating an exhibit, and worked at the Tyler History Center to create text panels, and install artifacts.
