Youngstown South Side fire kills several dogs
YOUNGSTOWN — Fire reports said several dogs died during a fire Thursday afternoon that destroyed a South Side home.
Crews found a heavy fire at 495 Almyra Ave. when they were called about 2:15 p.m. and found five Dachsunds in cages in the driveway when they got there. The homeowner told firefighters he was watching television with his wife when he noticed a fire, but he delayed in calling 911 because he tried to put the fire out himself.
Reports said when the smoke was too much, the homeowner picked up two cages with dogs and ran outside but could not get back in to get the other dogs. Reports said five dogs perished, but did not say what type of breeds they were.
Firefighters also found four propane tanks that were being used for heat and several electric cords were found through the house, with an extension cord from the basement to the living room all burned up. Reports said the fire started around a clothes dryer.
Damage is listed at $7,000.
