Steelers’ Bell suspended 3 games
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell is facing a three-game suspension following his arrest on DUI and marijuana charges last August.
A person with direct knowledge of the suspension told The Associated Press Bell is expected to appeal the suspension. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the disciplinary action had not been announced by the league.
The 23-year-old Pro Bowler ended up pleading no contest and was sentenced to 15 months of probation and entered into a diversion program.
Browns sign free agent tight end Housler
The Browns have signed free agent tight end Rob Housler.
Housler, who spent the past four seasons with Arizona, at least temporarily fills the void left when former Pro Bowler Jordan Cameron signed with Miami.
The 27-year-old Housler caught 105 passes for 1,133 yards and a touchdown in four years with the Cardinals. Last season, the 6-foot-5, 250-pounder had nine receptions for 129 yards.
Sun Devils hire Hurley
Arizona State has hired Bobby Hurley as its basketball coach.
The 43-year-old Hurley spent the past two years as the head coach at Buffalo, where he led the Bulls to 23 wins and an NCAA Tournament berth this past season.
He replaces Herb Sendek, who was fired March 24 after nine seasons.
Hurley has an extensive basketball background, playing for father Bob Hurley Sr. in Jersey City, New Jersey, and four years at Duke. A point guard, he led the Blue Devils to national championships in 1991 and 1992 and was an All-American in 1993.
Providence advances in Frozen Four
Noel Acciari and Mark Jankowski scored second-period goals, Jon Gillies made 25 saves and Providence beat Nebraska-Omaha 4-1 on Thursday night in the Frozen Four to advance to the national championship game for the second time in school history.
Trevor Mingoia and Nick Saracino also scored for the Friars (25-13-2). They will face Boston University (28-7-5) in the championship game Saturday night at TD Garden.
Jake Guentzel scored and Ryan Massa made 44 saves for Nebraska-Omaha (20-13-6).
BU beats North Dakota in Frozen Four
Jack Eichel scored two goals and Boston University held off North Dakota 5-3 on Thursday night in the Frozen Four to advance to the championship game.
The Terriers (28-7-5) will face Hockey East rival Providence (25-13-2) in the title game Saturday night at TD Garden. The Friars beat Nebraska-Omaha 4-1 in the first semifinal.
Eichel opened the scoring on a power play in the first period, Brandon Hickey also had a power-play score and A.J. Greer and Doyle Somerby had second-period goals.
Matt O’Connor (Youngstown Phantoms 2010-12) made 36 saves for the Terriers, seeking their sixth NCAA title. Providence, making its second trip to the championship, is trying to win for the first time in school history.
Luke Johnson, Troy Stecher and Connor Gaarder scored for North Dakota (29-10-3). Zane McIntyre stopped 22 shots.
Bulls come back from 19 down to beat Heat
Pau Gasol had 16 points and 15 rebounds and the Chicago Bulls easily wiped out a 19-point halftime deficit to beat Miami 89-78.
Aaron Brooks and Taj Gibson each scored 14 points for the Bulls, who were outscored 33-12 in the second quarter — then went on a staggering 39-8 run to open the second half. Miami missed its first 12 shots after halftime, and the freefall never stopped. Mike Dunleavy and Derrick Rose each had 12 for Chicago, which moved back into the No. 3 spot in the Eastern Conference standings.
Hassan Whiteside had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Heat. Dwyane Wade scored nine points. The Heat were outscored 57-27 after halftime.
