On March 22, the Boardman Rotary Club hosted a Pancake Breakfast at the Maple Syrup Festival in Boardman Park. They served pancakes from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Club member Lee Monit, said the rotary also has this event the October Festival each year.

“This is our 33rd year,” Monit said. “It is one of our major fundraisers for Boardman Rotary.”

The rotary works with high school Interact clubs, namely Boardman High School and Cardinal Mooney High School, as part of their crew of volunteers. In addition to the help from club members and high school students there are many sponsors that fund the startup cost. All of the work is purely volunteer, however and the money goes toward the bigger entity.

“All the funds that we raise go back into the community,” Monit said. “One hundred percent redistributed back to the community.”

Ralph Woods, a man enjoying the perks of the Pancake Breakfast and a first-timer to this annual event, said he saw it on the news that morning and just had to come out for the pancakes.

“I like pancakes and I wanted to support the rotary,” Woods said. “They’re a good group.”

Each year the club has seen gradual growth in attendance.

“We served about 2100-2500 people last year – in two weekends,” Monit said.

Pat Cenia, a repeat attendee to the Rotary’s Pancake Breakfast, and her husband noticed the growth Monit was talking about.

“We come every year, but this is probably the most crowded I have ever seen it,” Cencia said. “We usually come at about the same time and usually by noon-ish things started to clear out a little bit. But, you know, people are still coming in. I think everyone wants to enjoy the day and have some great pancakes.”
