Experts: 3 other shots detected in deadly 2012 police salvo
CLEVELAND (AP) — Sound experts say they detected three additional gunshot sounds in a recording of gunfire attributed to a Cleveland police officer on trial for voluntary manslaughter in the 2012 deaths of two unarmed suspects.
Michael Brelo was the only officer criminally charged among the 13 who fired a total of 137 shots that night. Prosecutors allege Brelo fired his final 15 rounds into the windshield of the suspects’ car after they were no longer a threat. Brelo’s trial began Monday.
Brelo’s attorneys have contended that other officers fired in that final barrage and that 43-year-old Timothy Russell and 30-year-old Malissa Williams remained a threat until Brelo removed the keys from Russell’s car.
Another sound expert who testified Thursday said he detected only 15 gunshots in the final barrage.
