Every month, librarians from the Austintown library come up with a program for tweens, generally children from ages 9-14.

This month librarian Starr Jones came up with the idea of making duct tape baskets, baskets designed entirely out of duct tape using folding, cutting and taping. Jones taught herself to make these baskets from a video and used similar methods to teach those wanting to participate.

“Everyone loves duct tape,” Jones said. “And you can learn anything on YouTube.”

Usually the ideas for tween programs is season-related — like the baskets, because it is getting closer to Easter. The librarians try very hard to keep the tween age group active at the library.

“It’s hard to get teenagers to come back once they have stopped coming for awhile,” Jones said. “And that’s the age that they start to drop off.”

In addition to duct tape baskets during the month of March, the library provided a March-Madness type event when children were able to vote on books in brackets, eventually ending up with one book - the most popular - as the winner.

Jones said she likes to see people being involved and having fun at their library.
