Canfield students earn top awards


Several Canfield High School students recently competed in the Ohio Governor’s State Youth Art Exhibition, the Scholastic Art Competition National Medalists and the Mahoning County Art Show.

In the Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, Candace Smith placed in the Top 25 for “White Umbrella,” receiving the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Smith will receive a 2015 Governor’s Award of Excellence on April 12 in Columbus.

Bonnie Anderson also placed in the show for two of her pieces, “Blue Summer” and “Plastic Meltdown.” All three pieces will be heading to Columbus to be displayed.

Tara Rogers received a National Gold Medal for her piece “The Handyman’s Canvas” in the national judging of the Scholastic Art Competition. She will be attending the ceremony in NYC in Carnegie Hall in June, where her piece will be on display.

In the annual Mahoning County Art Show, Canfield High School students that earned awards included Lauren Adams, Alexa Bodine, Bailey Brocker, Kasey Hood, Morgan Leonard, Kailey Love, Moira Lumsden, Raquel Markulin, Jennifer McClune, Chayla Regano, Erin Risner, Tara Rogers, Nicole Schmidt and Abrielle Sigler.

The Mahoning County Awards Show and Ceremony will take place May 6 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.
