Man charged after car and foot chase in Warren

WARREN — John J. Welch, 39, of State Road in Champion and state Route 87 in Farmdale, was released Wednesday from the Trumbull County Jail after posting $5,000 bond on charges of failure to comply with the orders of a police officer, resisting arrest and driving under suspension.

He pleaded not guilty to the resisting arrest and driving under suspension; a not-guilty plea was entered for him on felony failure to comply.

Police arrested him at 11:37 a.m. Tuesday on McMyler Avenue Northwest after a car and foot chase that ended when Detective David Weber of the Street Crimes Unit tackled him.

Weber initially followed and spoke to Welch because his driving was erratic. Then when the detective walked up beside Welch’s vehicle, Welch drove away, leading to the chase.

Police recovered suspected crack cocaine, heroin and crack pipe either in the car, in his pants pocket or in an area where he had been running, police said. No drug charges had been filed as of Wednesday.
