400-pound alligator moved from Texas pond to preserve
GROVES, Texas
A 400-pound alligator safely hauled out of a Southeast Texas pond has a new home at a tourist attraction that caters to gators.
Gator Country preserve owner Gary Saurage said Tuesday that the 11-foot reptile joins more than 400 other alligators at the preserve in Beaumont, Texas.
Saurage got the animal after a landowner in nearby Groves called about an aggressive alligator in a rural pond where children swim.
Saurage went to the swampy site to rope and remove the male alligator, which he estimates is 35 to 40 years old.
Saurage says the alligator is healthy and that he’s happy to give the “majestic animal” a new home.
The biggest creature at Gator Country is a 12-foot, 6-inch alligator nicknamed Kong.
Burger King to pay for wedding of Mr. Burger and Ms. King
SPRINGFIELD, Ill.
Burger King is paying the expenses and providing gifts for the wedding of an Illinois couple with an interesting connection to the fast-food restaurant chain. Joel Burger and Ashley King accepted the company’s proposal Monday.
The State Journal-Register reports that the couple has been known as Burger-King since they were in the fifth grade together, in New Berlin near Springfield.
The couple announced their engagement this spring with a photo next to the sign at a local Burger King restaurant. Although a woman’s name usually comes first in an engagement announcement, they decided to flip their names.
A Burger King spokesman says the company felt an overwhelming urge to help the happy couple celebrate their upcoming marriage.
The Burger-King nuptials will take place July 17 in nearby Jacksonville.
Dallas cops seek peacock thief
DALLAS
Authorities are seeking a man who snatched a wild peacock from outside a Dallas house.
Home-security video shows the man walking up to the male peacock, then grabbing the bird and taking off in an SUV.
Homeowner Lisa Solis filed a report with Dallas police after Saturday night’s incident. Solis says the animal was taken as it called out to possible mates.
The security video shows the male, with its colorful plumage extended, near some female birds. A man is seen walking up, grabbing the bird by its legs and dragging the animal away. Nearby residents heard the bird’s screeching.
Neighbors say the flock has roamed the area for more than 20 years.
