Children killed in fire

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Two children were killed in a fire at a home at 4271/2 Boyles Ave. in a fire about 2:10 a.m. Tuesday.

A fire department spokesman said crews were called for a fire in an upstairs bedroom, and when they arrived, they found a police officer lying in the doorway overcome by smoke. He was taken by fellow officers to Jameson Memorial Hospital.

The spokesman said there were four adults and four children inside the home, and all of the adults and two of the children made it outside.

The spokesman said investigators were told two c andles were burning in the room where the fire started but investigators are not yet sure if that was the cause.

The ages of the children who died, both boys, are 5 years and 2 months, the spokesman said.
