2 children die in New Castle fire

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Two children were killed in a fire at a home at 4271⁄2 Boyles Ave. about 2:10 a.m. today.

A fire department spokesman said crews were called for a fire in an upstairs bedroom and when the arrived they found a police officer lying in the doorway overcome by smoke. He was taken by fellow officers to Jameson Memorial Hospital and is expected to be OK, the spokesman said.

The spokesman said there were four adults and four children inside the home and all of the adults and two of the children made it outside.

The spokesman said investigators were told two candles were burning in the room where the fire started but investigators are not yet sure if that was the cause.

The ages of the children who died, both boys, are 5 and two months, the spokesman said.
