Students in the Early Childhood Development program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center earned seven gold medal first-place ratings and four silver medals after competing in the 2015 FCCLA Regional Skills Event at Tallmadge High School last month.
The students competed in four categories: language and literacy, curriculum unit development, specific task assessment and early childhood team.
With each of these categories the students had to research, develop and present lesson plans, activities and kits that met the state’s content standards for early childhood education.
Seniors Jordann Barker from West Branch, Erin Suggett from Sebring and Alison Huffman and Barbara Schell, both from Austintown, earned a gold medal working together on the early childhood team event preparing and presenting an impromptu lesson after a theme. Their theme was “Germs.”
West Branch senior Brianna Marshall was a gold-medal recipient for her competition in the curriculum unit development where she was required to create a display board showcasing prescribed criteria on her chosen theme.
