Voter registration for May primary ends at 9 p.m. Monday

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

County election boards will be open to 9 p.m. Monday, the last day to register for the primary, even though local election officials don’t expect more than a handful to show up.

Also, local election officials aren’t anticipating much traffic when early voting starts Tuesday.

“Usually in this kind of election we get very few” people who register on the last day, said Joyce Kale-Pesta, Mahoning County Board of Elections director. “Registration has been a very quiet so far.”

About two-thirds of eligible voters in Mahoning County don’t have a primary.

There are only citywide races in Youngstown and Struthers. There’s a school levy in South Range.

Also, one precinct in Washingtonville — a village in both Mahoning and Columbiana counties — will vote on a police tax levy renewal, one precinct in Smith Township will vote on an Alliance library renewal, and one precinct in Coitsville will vote on a Hubbard school renewal.

In Trumbull County, Jodi F. Dibble, elections director, said, “I wish we’d have people come in, but I’m not expecting many to register Monday. We usually have a few trickle in for voter registration. It’s going to be very slow and it’s a shame.”
