Melinda Trimmer West Branch | Girls Basketball
The road wasn’t easy, but the Melinda Trimmer-led West Branch team made a dream come true.
“Getting to say we played in the final four was the best feeling in the world,” Trimmer said. “I dreamed about it since I was little and so have my teammates.”
Trimmer won the Division II player of year award, but loved putting her teammates first.
“When the individual awards came I was just really humbled and honestly surprised,” she said. “I was more focused on the team for sure.”
The Warriors finished the season 27-2 after bowing out to Toledo Rogers 51-37 in the state semifinals.
“It was absolutely crazy; you can’t really prepare for that type of atmosphere,” Trimmer said. “They were definitely the most physical team I played in my high school career. They were great defensively.”
On the way to the state semifinal berth, Trimmer and the Warriors overcame the hump of the regional finals by beating Geneva 50-30.
“For us to accomplish that was pretty huge,” Trimmer said.
Trimmer said the hard work put in by her and her teammates was something she’ll remember.
Trimmer learned many lessons while at West Branch.
“The game is something that’s a lot bigger than yourself,” Trimmer said.
She is staying in the area to continue her basketball career at Youngstown State.
“I’m definitely looking forward to it. I always want to get back out there on the court,” Trimmer said. “It will be a new experience for me, but I’m really hoping everything will settle in just like it would any other time.”
