Canfield, Boys Bowling

This season wasn’t the first time Andrew Letscher made the state bowling tournament.

But it was different this time around for the Canfield junior.

In the 2012-13 season the Cardinals won the team title when Letscher was a freshman.

“The big difference was when we would go as a team we would take a bus down,” Letscher said. “And we would stay overnight the night before.”

This time, he qualified as an individual and made the trip that morning.

“This year I just drove down with my mom,” Letscher said. “We just got there and I bowled my three games.”

Letscher placed third, bowling a 636 series with a high game of 226.

“As an individual, it’s just 16 of you over on a couple different pairs of lanes,” Letscher said. “It’s just a lot more conservative then a team event.”

Letscher says there was a lot of noise surrounding the state team tournament.

“In high school and college bowling when there is team events, it’s extremely loud,” he said.

Bowling has been a way of life for Letscher since he was young.

His parents, Martin and Sarah, own McKinley Lanes in Niles.

“It wasn’t forced upon me, but when I was little it wasn’t even a question that I was going to be a bowler,” Letscher said. “I think I threw my first ball when I was nine months.”

Letscher was happy about his performance this season, but fondly remembers rolling the winning ball for the state title.

He remembers parents screaming and yelling for him before he rolled the title-winning frame.

“That moment was really, really special,” Letscher said. “With all the pictures taken it was really exciting. It’s something that I will always remember.”

Letscher has one more year left of high school bowling and “has a lot of stuff in the works” for next season.
