Hilltop students blow off steam before spring break begins

Students of Hilltop Elementary ran and danced inside the school’s gym as they celebrated the approaching spring break.
The Parent Teacher Organization of Hilltop hosted “Fun in the Sun” on Thursday during the lunch and recess periods for the kids of the building.
“It’s just nice after having them cooped up all winter ... to give them a day to cut loose,” said Joe Maroni, principal at Hilltop.
Julie Miller of the Hilltop PTO said there are 275 families that pay to be a part of the Hilltop PTO group. Many parents were assisting kids while they ate lunch on their blankets in the cafeteria and got an ice cream treat to finish off the lunch.
“It is good,” said Brinkley Bair, a 71/2 year-old second-grader, while eating her ice cream. “But it’s melting very fast.”
Maroni and Miller said the event is always a hit on the day before spring break starts.
“The kids are excited to get out, let off some steam for the hour they get for lunch and recess,” Miller said.
Thursday’s storms did not interrupt the festivities as the event took place inside, as it does every year.
Brinkley said she was looking forward to spring break where she gets to go to her “grandpa’s dock and go fishing.”
DJ Anthony Gannone provided music during the recess, bouncing from hits such as “Call Me Maybe” and “Gangnam Style” as kids ran and danced the winter away. Kids were free to request songs during recess.
“Our PTO is fantastic, and they support our kids,” Maroni said.
