YOUNGSTOWN
United Community Financial Corp., holding company of The Home Savings Loan Co., welcomed Ellen J. Tressel as the newest member of both the UCFC and Home Savings board of directors. Her appointment is effective Wednesday.
Tressel brings her tradition of community involvement to the Home Savings and UCFC board. She also has been an active board member for many charitable organizations over the years. Tressel also adds 14 years of experience in the financial service industry.
VILLA store to open on Belmont Avenue
YOUNGSTOWN
A Philadelphia-based retailer, VILLA, will celebrate the grand opening of its 92nd location Friday.
A $50 gift card will be given to the first 40 people in line age 16 or older Friday, and most of items in the store will be 20 percent off.
There will be DJs spinning live at the event, along with high-school drumlines.
The location is at 3620 Belmont Ave.
New Eye Care Associates location
WARREN
Eye Care Associates will have a grand opening of its newest location at 4060 North River Road today.
The new 6,000-square-foot facility will provide care in all areas of ophthalmology and optometry.
Eye Care Associates Inc. has four locations in the Mahoning Valley.
Macy’s plans big holiday hiring spree
NEW YORK
Macy’s plans to hire about 86,000 seasonal holiday workers nationwide to bolster its stores, call centers and distribution hubs, a 3.6 percent increase from last year.
The department-store chain, which also operates Bloomingdale’s, said Monday that the growth is being fueled by its expanding online business.
This year, about 10,000 of the total 86,000 seasonal workers will be based in eight distribution centers across the country.
US grants $45M to link job training
WASHINGTON
Vice President Joe Biden announced almost a half-billion dollars in grants Monday to community colleges working with employers on job training.
Linking training to industry demand is key to the Obama administration’s strategy for improving wages and reducing unemployment.
Massasoit Community College in Massachusetts and Wisconsin’s Chippewa Valley Technical College received the largest grants of about $20 million each.
Toyota pickup recall
DETROIT
Toyota says it is recalling 690,000 Tacoma pickup trucks because the rear leaf springs could break, puncture the gas tank and cause a fire.
The recall covers Tacoma Four-by-Four and Pre-Runner pickups from the 2005 through 2011 model years.
The automaker says the leaf springs can fracture due to stress and corrosion.
