Spartan Boys soccer plays Austintown

The Boardman High School boys soccer team ran it’s record to 7-4 on the season and improved to 2-3 in the All-American Conference Red Tier standing with Thursday’s 1-0 win over visiting Austintown Fitch.

Junior Kevin Durkin made his first varsity start as goal keeper for the Spartans and registered six saves as Boardman shutout their third consecutive opponent. Defensively, seniors Adam Calhoun and Zach

Fryda played remarkably well in keeping the Falcons out of the score column.

Offensively, Boardman played well against Austintown’s defense, but had many of their shots turned away by the back defender and Falcon keeper. Junior Andrew Gable provided the late game heroics by scoring

the lone goal of the evening. Junior Shane Learman took the ball out wide on the left corner of the field, beat one Falcon defender and crossed the ball into Gable. The cross was redirected by Gable’s

header to register the game winning goal in the 79th minute of the contest. Boardman’s midfield and defense kept the Falcon’s at bay for the final 1:48 to secure the win.

In the junior varsity match, Boardman logged a 2-1 win. Scoring for the Spartans were senior Chris Walters and junior Chris Dailey. Junior Liam McCarthy had three first half saves, while freshman Jeffrey Holmes tallied two in the second half for Boardman.
