YSU names interim STEM dean

Gregg Sturrus, chairman of Youngstown State University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, will serve as interim dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Sturrus will replace Martin Abraham, who has been named interim provost and vice president for academic affairs.

In addition, James Andrews, professor of physics and astronomy, will become acting department chairman. Teri Riley, interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, will become senior associate provost.

The changes will become effective Oct. 8 after approval by YSU trustees.

Sturrus earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and math from Hope College in Holland, Mich., and a doctorate in physics from the University of Notre Dame. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Virginia, was a visiting professor at both Notre Dame and Colorado State University, and joined the YSU faculty in 1991.

Sturrus was promoted to professor in 1999 and has been department chairman since 2004. He is a member of numerous professional societies, has received several grants and awards, and has authored more than a dozen published scholarly papers.
