North High grad in college’s hall of fame

Michael D. North, a 1968 graduate of North High, was inducted earlier this month into the Delaware State University athletic hall of fame.

North was a four-year starter at outside linebacker for Delaware State and during his time there the Hornets led all NCAA Division II teams in run defense.

While at North High, North was named to the All-City team.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Delaware State. He has been employed since college as an editor at WPIX-TV in New York City and was nominated for an Emmy Award.

Unbeaten teams lead football computer list

The Mahoning Valley’s four undefeated high school football teams are, as expected, at or near the top of their respective regions in the first release of the OHSAA computer ratings.

Hubbard is second and Poland fourth in Division III, Region 7. The two play Friday at Poland.

Western Reserve is first in the Division VII, Region 23 list. McDonald, which travels to Western Reserve on Oct. 3, is third in Division VI, Region 19.

Clipper Invitational is Saturday in Columbiana

COLUMBIANA

The 16th annual Clipper Cross Country Invitational is scheduled Saturday at Columbiana High’s Ward Athletic Complex.

The middle school runners will compete on a 1.85-mile course. The girls’ division will start at 10:45 a.m. and the boys’ division will follow at 11:15 a.m.

The high school runners will compete on a 5K course. The girls’ division will start at 11:45 a.m. and the boys’ division will follow at 12:35 p.m.

Canfield duo tops girls Division I tennis seeds

Last year’s third place doubles pairing of Hannah Cianciola and Ashley Kaleel are back as the top ranked duo entering this year’s Division I girls sectional tennis tournament. Jamie Charnas and Karoline Kaiser of Warren Harding are seeded fifth.

In singles, Elena Slemons of Canfield is the third seed, Capri Corbin of Fitch is the seventh seed, Cara Hernon of Harding is the eighth seed and Dominique Cox rounds out the top 10.

The top four advance to the district tournament.

Shannon Miller scored Poland’s goal in Monday’s 5-1 loss to Niles in a girls soccer game. Dani Rutana had the assist.

Also, Madison McGuire scored for Niles, not Maddison Hogan.

Blue Jackets make 42 saves, blank Penguins

COLUMBUS

Sergei Bobrovsky and Oscar Dansk combined to make 42 saves, and the Columbus Blue Jackets topped the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-0 in a preseason game on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh (0-2) again played without stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Thomas Greiss went the distance and made 26 saves.
