Rick Bentley, television writer for The Fresno (Calif.) Bee, has been checking out the new series that will premiere this fall with an eye toward identifying actors who will make an impact. Here are some of his picks:

v Gina Rodriguez, “Jane the Virgin” (CW): Of all the potential selections this year, none has more potential as a rising star. There hasn’t been an actress on TV with so much on-screen charisma and off-screen charm since Kristen Bell on “Veronica Mars.”

v Cristela Alonzo, “Cristela” (ABC): She plays a law-school student determined to become a lawyer despite misgivings by her Mexican-American family. Alonzo is a stand-up comic, actress, writer and producer who previously worked on “Mind of Mencia.”

v Camren Bicondova, “Gotham” (FOX): The actress plays Selina Kyle — who will eventually become Catwoman — in the series based on the Batman legend.

v Alfred Enoch, “How to Get Away With Murder” (ABC): He plays one of four law students hand-picked to work with the school’s top professor. That turns the courtroom into their classroom. Enoch is best known for his role of Dean Thomas in the “Harry Potter” movies.

v Grant Gustin, “The Flash” (CW): He reprises the role of Barry Allen, who becomes the The Flash, first seen on “Arrow.” Before taking on the comic-book role, he played Sebastian Smythe on “Glee.”

“Gotham” (8 p.m., Fox): The new TV season revs up in earnest this week, and no freshman series arrives lathered in more hype than this fun, visually gorgeous Batman-origin story. It delivers viewers to a grimy, corrupt city where a rookie cop (Ben McKenzie) is taking the first steps toward becoming Commissioner Gordon, and an 11-year-old Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) is struggling to find his way in the world. Best of all, we see how a bunch of colorful villains — including the Penguin, Catwoman and the Riddler — got their start.

“The Voice” (8 p.m., NBC): “The Voice” tries to continue hitting the high notes in Season 7. See story at right.

“The Big Bang Theory” (8 p.m., CBS): As Season 8 of “The Big Bang Theory” unfolds, our favorite gang of geeks will be trying to prove they’re worth those hefty pay raises. A second episode immediately follows the opener.

“Sleepy Hollow” (9 p.m., Fox): Can “Sleepy Hollow” become even more kooky in its second season? We can always dream.

“Scorpion” (9 p.m., CBS): Geniuses and misfits help the government prevent disasters.

“Forever” (10 p.m., ABC): A New York City crime-fighting medical examiner who cannot die has honed Sherlock Holmes- like powers of deduction over centuries.
