Penguins runners do well at Iona meet

Bronx, N.Y.

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s cross country teams each placed in the top 10 at the 20th Annual Br. John “Paddy” Doyle/Iona College Meet of Champions on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park. Both squads had their best-ever finishes in the meet as the men placeed ninth out of 23 teams while the women were 10th out of 20 squads. The men finished ahead of Kent State and a strong Iona squad which was ranked 12th in the nation.

For the men, junior Austin McLean placed 18th with a time of 26:16 in the 8K race. Nick Gliha was 20 seconds behind McLean at 26:36 to finish 32nd while Ryan Sullivan placed 42nd at 26:47. All three of those times represented the fastest times ever run at the meet by Penguins racers.

For the women, Michelle Klim finished 27th with a time of 23:23 in the 6K race. Two spots and one second behind was McKinsie Klim with a time of 23:24.

Hubbard-Poland tickets sold at both schools

Tickets for the Hubbard at Poland high school football game on Friday are expected to go quickly.

The Poland athletic department will be selling general admission tickets in the high school athletic office from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tickets to the game can also be purchased at Trolio’s T-Shirts from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Tickets also will be available at the Hubbard High office and at Eagle Wear Inc, Repair That Glass and Razor Rob’s in Hubbard during working hours.

Student tickets are $4 and adults are $6. All tickets at the gate are $6.

Higuain free kick lifts Crew past Revolution

COLUMBUS

Federico Higuain scored on a free kick in the 48th minute and the Columbus Crew ended the New England Revolution’s five-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory Saturday night. Ethan Finlay won the free kick for the Crew (10-9-10), drawing a yellow card from Darrius Barnes. Bobby Shuttleworth blocked Higuain’s penalty kick in the 85th minute to keep New England (13-13-3) within a goal. The Crew moved alone into the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Philadelphia.
