The newest project of the Rotary Club of Austintown is “Fly The Flag,” with more than 100 in place since the July 4 start.

Flags are on 10 foot staff (local steel) and display a 3 foot by 5 foot American made flag. They are displayed for six holidays a year, covering Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Patriots Day on Sept. 11 and Veterans Day.

Club members assemble, place the holder in the ground and add or remove the flag on a schedule. Interested Austintown residents can go to www.austintownflags.com for information and sign up, with the cost of $30 per year. Two are on display at the corner of Mahoning and Raccoon/Norquest.

The speaker at the Sept. 8 rotary meeting was Sr. Jerome Corcoran and Sr. Mary Dunn, on behalf of “Mission College,” a local program that helps minority high school graduates to attend local universities, which costs about $20,000 per year.

Sr. Jerome is determined to help raise funds to supplement the Pell Grants available, which only cover about 25 percent of the annual cost. She encouraged Rotarians to help students with grant applications and tutoring to increase their ability to attain a degree.
