The Poland library hosted its third of four Knitting at the Library events on Aug. 21, bringing together local knitters to compare the knitting projects they’re working on.

“We’re doing a lot more programming and I’m a knitter. It made sense,” librarian Missy Williams said of how the program got started.

Knitters bring in their projects, socialize with other knitters and talk. If anyone attends who doesn’t know how to knit, it can turn into a knitting lesson.

The first meeting was in February with the second in May. The final event of the year will be on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.

Williams said almost anything can be knitted, including sweaters, socks, shawls, scarves. hats, gloves, mittens and skirts.

She added that events like Knitting at the Library are needed because of a lack of places for knitters to get together.

“There aren’t any real knitting groups locally, so it’s a nice chance for people who knit,” Williams said. “There also aren’t any real knitting stores. The closest thing we have to a knitting store is The Flaming Ice Cube [in Boardman], which they offer knitting stuff, but they’re not strictly a knitting store.

“Knitters do like to socialize and they like to have a chance to meet other knitters, and we give them an opportunity to swap patterns and get help through trouble spots and just talk and socialize.”
