Peter Kusky, engineer for Aqua Ohio and an Austintown alumni and resident, was the guest speaker at the Aug. 3 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown. Kusky’s main topic was the importance of a dependable water supply, especially in light of the crisis in Toledo. He announced that the drinking ban had been lifted, but the chance for reoccurance is strong in that area because of its limited flow into Lake Erie from the Maumee River. The eastern end of Lake Erie, closer to Mahoning County, does not have as many problems with dangerous algae because of a much larger watershed. Reminding members of an almost yearly event where Meander water acquires a smell and taste issue in the fall, Kusky noted that this in not dangerous to health, just a common problem with man-made reservoirs.

Aqua Ohio serves customers in many states and areas of Ohio. It has been in business for more than one hundred years and is a regulated public utility.

When asked about bottled water, members were told that tap water is much more heavily tested and safer than the bottled variety.
