Youngstown

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly will visit Youngstown State University’s College of Creative Arts and Communication on Oct. 3 for a reception, gallery talk and fundraising event.

The reception will start at 5:30 p.m. in Bliss Hall’s Judith Rae Solomon Gallery. Admission is free to the public, but reservations are required; contact Mari Ann Cann at 330-941-3629 or email her at mcann@ysu.edu before Sept. 30.

Kennerly’s exhibit will remain installed in the space through Oct. 5.

He has donated 53 photographs from his newest collection, “David Hume Kennerly on the iPhone,” to support the creation of the David Hume Kennerly Scholarship in Art, which is geared toward photography students.

Forty of the photographs have been framed and will be available for sale at the Oct. 3 reception at a pre-established price of $500 each. The remaining 13 unframed photographs will be available for $350 each. Photos may be previewed at ysu.edu/art/kennerly.

“While the event is to serve as a fundraiser for art scholarships, it’s also a celebration of one of the most profound and respected photographers in the world today,” said Bryan W. DePoy, dean of the College of Creative Arts and Communication. “We are so grateful for Kennerly’s generosity and support. To have his name memorialized and affiliated with the College of Creative Arts and Communication is a tremendous honor.”

Kennerly has been named “One of the 100 Most Important People in Photography” by American Photo magazine.

He has been shooting on the front lines of history for decades. His coverage of the war in Vietnam earned him the 1972 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Feature Photography.

Kennerly has been executive producer of several television documentaries, and most recently produced “The President’s Gatekeepers,” a project about White House chiefs of staff which ran on the Discovery Channel in September 2013.
