Jordan Andrews, a 6-foot-4, 175-pound shooting guard from Riverside Academy in New Orleans, verbally committed to Youngstown State on Monday.

He averaged 11.1 points per game last season and chose the Penguins over Arkansas State and Robert Morris.

Howland grad O’Brien earns OAC award

BEREA

All-conference linebacker Dan O’Brien, a Howland High graduate, was named the Ohio Athletic Conference’s defensive player of the week.

He had a career-high 12 tackles and a safety in the Yellow Jackets’ season-opening win over Bluffton. O’Brien is also academic all-conference with a 3.803 grade point average.

United Way offering Super Bowl raffle

YOUNGSTOWN

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is selling raffle tickets for a trip to the 2015 Super Bowl.

Winners receive a trip for two to Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix on Feb. 1 or a $5,000 cash prize. There is also a $1,000 second prize and a $500 third prize.

Tickets are $100. No more than 250 will be sold. The winning ticket will be drawn on Dec. 2 at the Lake Club and the winner need not be present.

Southside boxers win recent fights

YOUNGSTOWN

A pair of Southside Boxing Club boxers won fights at a recent card at New Castle High School.

Isaac Chatman, 17, defeated Akeen Bolden of Farrell in a 130-pound novice division bout, while Damajha Robinson, 10, beat Jahmal Bowman of Cleveland in a 70-pound bout.

Both fighters are trained by Jack Loew. The card was promoted by Terry Black of The Foundation Boxing and Youth Center.

Spots still available for YSU wine tasting

Spots are still available for the Youngstown State men’s basketball team’s wine taste, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 24 at L’uva Bella Winery and Bistro.

Tickets are $35 and include five wine tastes of your choice with cheese and crackers and a silent auction.

Harbaugh: McDonald’s process must play out

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh insists public pressure will not sway his decision to play Ray McDonald during an investigation into the defensive lineman’s arrest on suspicion of domestic violence.

Harbaugh says there “could be” a resolution in the case this week for McDonald, arrested at his home Aug. 31 while celebrating his 30th birthday with teammates and friends.
