Writers meeting set for Monday

CANFIELD

Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend the next meeting of Monday Night Writers, to be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Peaberry’s Cafe, 4350 Boardman- Canfield Road.

Led by professional writer Nancy Christie (www.nancychristie.com/books/traveling), the two-hour session includes a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on works-in-progress.

The fee is $10 per class, and registration is preferred.

Valley author has new Kindle work

Mike Prelee, a new author in the Mahoning Valley, has published his first novel on Amazon for Kindle called “Milky Way Repo,” available for Kindle download for $4.99.

The science-fiction thriller is a story about Nathan Teller, who is the owner of Milky Way Repossessions, a company that tracks down and repossesses starships whose owners are delinquent in their payments.

They get a call from Saji Vy, the richest man in the city. One of his starships, the Charon, a body barge that moves the deceased from colonized moons and planets back to Earth for burial, is being held for ransom by a religious cult in the Alpha Centauri system.

The Children of the Apocalyptic Rainbow have the ship and need to get paid. Nathan and his crew soon find themselves surrounded by slacker cultists and an organized crime syndicate determined to collect a gambling debt.

Discussion group to meet Sept. 23

SALEM

“Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” written by Lisa See, will be discussed at the Sept. 23 Adult Book Discussion Group, which will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. at Salem Memorial Building, 785 E. State St., Room 11.

An in-depth view of two lives lived in reality and secrecy during an era of Chinese history and culture that has only recently changed is the centerpiece of this story.

The strength of women and the complexity of their relationships are explored in this work of fiction that mirrors life.

The book is available for borrowing from the library, 821 E. State St., and in e-book format through the library’s website at www.salem.lib.oh.us.

The group meets the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m.; the public is welcome.
