Annual Otis Christian run/walk-a-thon is Sept. 24

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The 2014 Otis Christian Run/Walk-a-Thon will take place at 3 p.m. Sept. 24 at Wick Park on the city’s North Side.

The event will raise funds for the Otis Christian Scholarship Fund, a need-based academic scholarship for minority students who attend Ursuline High School.

Participants will be encouraged to either run or walk each lap in support of the scholarship.

The scholarship was founded in 2008 by Keith L. Coleman of Youngstown, a former Ursuline High School student.

Christian, of Youngstown, a longtime friend of the Coleman family, was a role model for Coleman and his twin brother, Kevin, and supported them through their school years until his death in 2005.

In the scholarship’s inaugural year, a run-a-thon took place at Wick Pick and was sponsored by the Ursuline High School cross-country team led by coach George Stroia.

Members of the cross-country team, in addition to members of the Otis Christian Family, received monetary pledges for each lap they ran. All proceeds went to the Otis Christian Scholarship.
