Northern Illinois 48, UNLV 34

LAS VEGAS

Drew Hare threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth to lead Northern Illinois. Cameron Stingily ran for the first of his two touchdowns midway through the first quarter to give the Huskies the lead, 7-3. After Northern Illinois was flagged for a personal foul that resulted in a safety late in the first quarter, Hare threw a pair of second-quarter touchdown passes and ran in from the 12 early in the third quarter to give the Huskies a 28-5 lead. The Runnin’ Rebels stormed back behind a pair of Blake Decker touchdown passes and a pair of scoring runs by Shaquille Murray-Lawrence to tie the game at 34 with 9:18 left. Hare threw 54 yards to Da’Ron Brown to give Northern Illinois the lead for good and Stingily added a final score with 1:56 left.

Indiana State 27, Ball State 20

MUNCIE, IND.

Mike Perish threw for three touchdowns, including a late go-ahead score to Kyani Harris to give Indiana State the upset victory. Perish’s 28-yard pass to Harris snapped a 20-20 tie. Indiana State (2-1) trailed 14-3, but two TD passes from Perish — 25 yards and 2 yards, respectively — put the Sycamores up 17-14 at the half. Scott Secor kicked two field goals for Ball State in the third quarter to tie the score. Perish led a 7-play, 63 yard drive that ended with Harris’ TD reception with 3:50 left to play. Ozzie Mann threw for 266 yards and one touchdown for the Cardinals (1-2).

Marshall 44, Ohio 14

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.

Rakeem Cato completed 17 of 29 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns, including a 77-yard third-quarter bomb to Angelo Jean-Louis. The 77-yard strike was Cato’s 100th career touchdown pass, joining Chad Pennington as the only Marshall quarterbacks to reach that plateau. Jean-Louis finished with 158 yards receiving and Davonte Allen added 137 more for the Thundering Herd (3-0), who racked up 705 yards of total offense and scored the first 41 points of the game.

Vanderbilt 34, Massachusetts 31

NASHVILLE

Ralph Webb scored on a 4-yard run with 1:08 remaining to give Vanderbilt a come-from-behind win. The winning score was set up on a 36-yard completion from Patton Robinette to C.J. Duncan. UMass (0-3) drove to the Vanderbilt 4-yard line only to have Blake Lucas miss a 22-yard field-goal attempt to the left with 2 seconds remaining.

Syracuse 40, Cent Michigan 3

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH.

Terrel Hunt had a career-best three touchdown runs and threw for another. The quarterback — ejected from the team’s opener after throwing a punch at an opponent — was 20 for 30 for 175 yards, including a 4-yard scoring pass to Brisly Estime in the second quarter that gave the Orange a 17-3 lead at intermission.

Western Michigan 45, Idaho 33

MOSCOW, IDAHO

Zach Terrell threw for three touchdowns and Jarvion Franklin ran for three more as Western Michigan cruised. Terrell threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter — both to Daniel Braverman for 31 and 57 yards — and Franklin’s 39-yard TD run gave the Broncos a comfortable 35-19 lead at the break. Franklin led the Broncos (1-1) with 210 yards on 33 carries, surpassing his 163-yard effort against Purdue to start his freshman season. The Vandals closed within 12 points after Matt Linehan threw a TD pass to Justin Podrabsky with 3:22 left in the third, but Franklin answered with a 7-yard touchdown run to end the quarter. Linehan threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Vandals (0-2).

Old Dominion 17, Eastern Michigan 3

NORFOLK, VA.

Freshman Richard Lawry scored on a 55-yard run early in the game and Antonio Vaughan added a 46-yard punt return for a touchdown late as Old Dominion held off Eastern Michigan. Lawry’s touchdown was the only score of the first half despite the Monarchs’ having a 261-113 advantage in total yards. Old Dominion kept picking up large chunks of yards but struggled on third down, converting just 2 of 15 third-down opportunities.
