BIG TEN conference | Saturday’s other games

Penn State 13, Rutgers 10

PISCATAWAY, N.J.

Bill Belton scored on a 5-yard run with 1:13 to play and Penn State rallied from a 10-point deficit to post a victory over Rutgers, spoiling the Scarlet Knights’ Big Ten Conference debut. Christian Hackenberg orchestrated the game-winning, six-play, 80-yard, drive with passes of 53 and 23 yards to Geno Lewis after the Nittany Lions (3-0, 1-0) took over with 3:02 to play.

Sam Ficken had kicked field goals of 32 and 25 yards earlier in the half. The Nittany Lions defense intercepted Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova five times. Nova scrambled 14 yards for a touchdown and Kyle Federico added a 32-yard field goal for Rutgers (2-1, 0-1), whose conference debut brought a record 53,774 fans to High Point Solutions Stadium.

Michigan 34, Miami (Ohio) 10

ANN ARBOR, MICH.

Derrick Green ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and Michigan overcame three first-half turnovers. The Wolverines (2-1) held the RedHawks (0-3) to eight first downs, but it wasn’t a particularly impressive win against a Miami team that has lost 19 straight. Devin Gardner went 13 of 20 for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Bowling Green 45, Indiana 42

BOWLING GREEN

Bowling Green’s James Knapke threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Roger Lewis with 9 seconds to play. Lewis, a freshman, finished with 16 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown. IU’s Tevin Coleman rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Indiana had one final chance, but Bowling Green’s James Sanford knocked down Sudfeld’s pass inside the 5-yard line. Sudfeld was 31-of-41 for 347 yards and a touchdown.

TCU 30, Minnesota 7

FORT WORTH, TEXAS

Receiver Josh Doctson caught two first-half touchdown receptions and TCU’s defense smothered Minnesota’s run-oriented attack. TCU (2-0) forced five turnovers and held Minnesota (2-1) to 99 yards rushing — 134 below its average. The Gophers’ lone score came on a 12-yard pass from freshman Chris Streveler to Maxx Williams with 10:56 to play.

Washington 44, Illinois 19

SEATTLE

Linebacker Shaq Thompson returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown, picked up a fumble and rumbled 52 yards for another score. Thompson became the first Washington player in 20 years to score via fumble and interception in the same game. Reggie Reser accomplished the feat in 1994 in a victory over California. Wes Lunt threw for 230 yards for the Fighting Illini (2-1), but was unable to take advantage of Washington’s depleted secondary.

Iowa State 20, Iowa 7

IOWA CITY, IOWA

Cole Netten hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left for Iowa State. Sam Richardson had 255 yards passing and 2 TDs for the Cyclones (1-2), who beat the rival Hawkeyes (2-1) for the third time in four tries. Jake Rudock threw for 146 yards and an interception for Iowa, which was held to just three points after halftime.

West Virginia 40, Maryland 37

COLLEGE PARK, MD.

Clint Trickett passed for 511 yards and four touchdowns, and West Virginia gave away a 22-point lead before Josh Lambert kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired to give the Mountaineers a victory. West Virginia (2-1) let a 28-6 lead dwindle to 28-27 in the third quarter, then gave away a 10-point advantage in the fourth quarter before Trickett directed a 65-yard drive to set up Lambert’s game-winning kick. Trickett went 37-for-49, and his passing yardage was the second-most in West Virginia history behind a 656-yard performance by Geno Smith in 2012. The Mountaineers finished with a whopping 694 yards in offense compared to 447 for Maryland (2-1). West Virginia’s Kevin White had 13 catches for 216 yards and Mario Alford caught 11 passes for 131 yards and two scores. A year ago, Maryland beat West Virginia 37-0 while Trickett watched from the sideline.
