SENIOR SALUTE — BAND EDITION
CLAIRE SCHNEIDER (left) and ZOË SOMMERS.
Name: Zo ´ Sommers; Claire Schneider
Instrument: Clarinet and Mellophone; Trumpet
Q. When did you start playing your instrument? Why did you pick the instrument(s) you are playing?
A. Sommers: I have been playing the clarinet since the fifth grade, and the mellophone since my freshman year in high school. I chose to play the clarinet because I thought it had a pretty sound. I play the mellophone because I wanted to try something new and different.
Schneider: In the fifth grade is when I started playing the trumpet. I didn’t choose the trumpet, the trumpet chose me.
Q. Best memory of being in band/marching band?
A. Sommers: I have plenty of amazing memories from both concert band and marching band, but one of my favorite experiences was out past trip to Disney World over New Year’s Eve and marching on Main Street USA.
Schneider: One of my best memories is going to Disney World with my band friends. It was a lot of fun. I have also enjoyed going to Massillon Band Night each year. Also some pretty awesome water balloon fights!
Q. Why is music important to you?
A. Sommers: Music helps me express myself and makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger than myself. I like too many musical numbers to count, but some of my favorite are “Russian Sailors Dance,” “Light Calvary” and the “80’s Medley” we will be performing this marching during half-time at the football games. They are all a lot of fun to perform.
Schneider: Music is always nice to listen to and play. I enjoyed playing “Malague ±a” and “All of the Lights.”
Q. If you were speaking to a group of students about joining the band, what would be your number one reason for joining the band?
A: Sommers: All of the memories. You make so many close friends in band and spend so much time together that it is like one big family. I’m going to miss everyone so much next year.
Schneider: My number one reason would be that it is fun and you have a lot of memories from it. Also, you don’t have to take gym. (I’m just joking….kind of)
Q. What college do you hope to attend/intended major?
A. Sommers: I’m still undecided on what college I plan on attending, but I intend to major in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
Schneider: I plan on attending Grove City College and major in Accounting.
