Inaugural meeting of Joanie's Sisters in Support is Wednesday


YOUNGSTOWN — Joanie’s Sisters in Support, a sorority of cancer survivors, is having its inaugural meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center, 1044 Belmont Ave.

The event includes a tour of the center, an overview of the facility by Dr. Rashid Abdu, and an update on the latest breast-cancer screening guidelines and treatments by Dr. Nancy Gantt.

Dr. Abdu, a general surgeon, is the driving force behind development of the center, named in honor of his wife, who died of breast cancer in 1994. Dr. Gantt, also a general surgeon, specializes in treating diseases of the breast and is a breast-cancer survivor.

The meeting is open to all women affected by breast or ovarian cancer and a guest. The reservation deadline is Monday. Call 330-480-2763. Free parking is available in the lot immediately adjacent to the center on Park Avenue.
