In May, seventh-grade students at Holy Family School participated in International Day, during which the students explored their own culture as well as the cultures of their classmates.
The event has been hosted for 27 years at the school. It is done during seventh grade because that is the grade in which students study about Europe.
“They each write a report about a country in Europe and present it to the class,” teacher Linda Taylor said. “In the spring we have everyone bring in a dish that is special to them. They usually bring in an item that is special to their heritage. It has always been successful. They are proud and excited to discuss their heritage.”
Some of the food items that were brought in for this year’s International Day included pasta, haluski, pierogies, Irish stew and desserts.
“International Day is an opportunity to try new foods from different cultures,” student Katherine Kali said. “I loved eating new foods that I wouldn’t normally eat. It was nice to have the opportunity to learn more about my classmates’ backgrounds. I enjoyed it so much, I wish we could do it every year.”
Taylor said the project is a good one for the students to keep an interest in class.
“I feel that the benefits are that it helps to keep students interested in social studies,” she said.
