BGMS volleyball topples Howland
The Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team lost to Howland 15-25 and 22-25 making them 3-2 on the season.
Lauren Fetsko served a good game while also getting a couple kills. Madison Ricciuti was a strong defensive player on the court. The BGMS eighth-grade team improved their season record to 2-3 by beating Howland 25-17 and 25-17. Kara Boerio had a couple kills and assists at the net while Kailee James had good blocks and played nice defense.
BHS teams defeat Badger
The Boardman High School girls varsity soccer team defeated Badger High School 5-0 during their first home match on the brand new turf field. Scoring for Boardman were senior Alison Green (three goals), senior Alexis Downie (one goal), senior Kristen Huck (one goal on a penalty kick). Other top players included senior Megan O’Neil, senior Alexis Cailor, junior Anna Saxton and freshman Cassie Stitt (each had one assist), senior Kristen Huck (three saves) and freshman Camille Holzschuh (one save). The varsity record is 3-4-0.
The Boardman junior varsity girls team defeated Badger 3-0. Scoring for Boardman were freshman Cassie Stitt (2 goals) and freshman Cara Higgins (one goal). Sophomore Mackenzie Kondas and freshman Katelyn Sawyer each had one assist, while freshman Abby Ankrom had three saves. The junior varsity record 3-4-0
Lady Spartans defeated
The Boardman Lady Spartans fell to 5-3 on the year with 1-3 (27-25, 17-25, 18-25, 18-25) loss to Lakeview on Sept. 4. Krista Johnson had 26 digs and nine kills, while Hope Landers had 12 kills. Courtney Platt had 26 digs and Katie Platt contributed 36 assists.
BHS girls soccer takes on Canfield
The Boardman High School girls soccer team hosted Canfield High School on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. It was an intense match with the scored tied 1-1 at half time. Senior Alison Green (#13) scored a goal with an assist from junior Lexi Caraballo (#23).
Sophomore Anita Mancini (#22) scored Canfield’s first half goal. Canfield pulled ahead from a penalty kick from junior Haylee Klacik (#11) with 32:56 left in the second half. Canfield scored two more goals, one from senior Sophia Mancini (#12) who was assisted by Haylee Klacik, and one from senior Candice Smith (#13), assisted by Anita Mancini (#22). Boardman added one more from a penalty kick by senior Payton Bryant (#9) with 2:05 minutes left in the match. Boardman’s record is 2-4-0 The Boardman junior varsity team lost 0-3 with a record of 2-4-0
BGMS volleyball plays AMS Blue
Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team improved their record to 3-1 by defeating AMS Blue 26-16, 21-25 and 25-17. Kennedy Page and Jenna Burns were strong servers for the team each scoring nine points. The eighth-grade team lost a very tough and competitive match against AMS Blue 25-21, 15-25 and 23-25 making their season record 1-3. Cate Green played a great back row and was not letting anything touch the floor, while Hannah Nawrocki had six kills.
Boardman volleyball is victorious
On Sept. 2, the Boardman Spartans volleyball team improved to 5-2 on the year with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) victory over Austintown. The Spartans were led by Hope Landers with nine kills and 12 digs, Krista Johnson with nine kills, nine digs and 10 points, and Katie Platt with 32 assists.
BGMS volleyball defeated by AMS Red
The Boardman Glenwood Middle School volleyball teams recently played closely matched AMS Red. The seventh-grade team lost a tough battle 18-25, 25-22 and 11-25, making their season record 2-1. Julia Yauger and Emma Ericson showed good defensive hustle during all matches. The eighth-grade team also fought hard, but lost to AMS Red 13-25, 25-21 and 15-25 to make them 1-2 on the season. Jenna Benko and Mary Garrett played strong defensive games.
Boardman girls soccer has loss
The Boardman High School Girls Soccer team played Howland at Howland on Aug. 27. The junior varsity team lost with a score of 2-4. Freshman Cassie Stitt scored one goal, while sophmore Alisa Earvin scored one goal and freshman Cara Higgins had one assist. Sophmore Skylar Bryant had one assist, as well.
The varsity team lost with a score of 1-2. Senior Alison Green scored one goal and senior Megan O’Neil had one assist.
Thomas “Chris” Smythe Memorial Golf Outing
The Thomas Christopher Smythe Memorial Scholarship Fund is honored to be able to assist a YSU student further their education in honor of a great man. Thomas “Chris” Smythe was an inspiration to many in the community and had involved himself in several activities, including rugby for Youngstown’s own Steel Valley Rugby team. Smythe lost his battle with cancer, but in order to keep his legend alive, the scholarship fund will be hosting the second Thomas Chris Smythe Memorial Golf Outing on Sept. 13 at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The cost is $65 per golfer if prepaid and $75 the day of with teams consisting of four players. Some of the prizes include hole in one prizes of $1000. a year membership to Olde Dutch Mill, a set of irons, as well as a new driver. There will also be a Chinese auction and 50/50 drawing.
Girls junior varsity soccer topples Lakeview
Boardman played Lakeview at Lakeview on Aug. 30. The junior varsity team won with a score of 4-0. Freshman Lexus Willis, freshman Cara Higgins, Mackenzie Kondas and sophomore Alisa Earvin each scored one goal. Assists were made by sophmore Skylar Bryant (2) and freshman Abby Ankrom had (1). The varsity lost with a score of 4-0.
