BOARDMAN

Township police are investigating a case of identity theft in which someone made nearly $5,000 worth of purchases using a Higher One prepaid card that was taken out using the victim’s name.

According to a police report filed earlier this week, the victim, who now lives in Florida, reported receiving a bill from Kent State University for $2,986 on Monday.

When she called the university to inquire about the bill, they told her the university had sent her a refund check for $4,737 in January, to an address where the victim said she has never lived.

According to the report, Higher One reported to the victim that the card was canceled in March because they could not verify the identity of the cardholder.

Multiple ATM withdrawals, airline tickets and transactions in Las Vegas were among the other charges, which total $4,737, on the card.
