Staff report
SALEM
The Salem Historical Society will host a Family Fall Fun Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at and around the society headquarters, 208 S. Broadway Ave.
Around the theme of the society’s featured exhibit “Ted Enders’ Gallery of Wildlife Mounts,” knowledgeable guides will discuss the 50 animals and birds on display.
There will be an opportunity to have a photo taken with an animal on display, as well as free face painting by the students of Heather Connor of United High School Honors Art Class. All events regarding the Ted Enders display will take place in Schell House on East Pershing Avenue; guests must enter through the Garden Gift Shop.
President Abraham Lincoln, played by Jim Crouse, and a Civil War soldier played John Gilbert, a Sons of Union Veterans member, will be present to continue their series commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
A presentation, their third in the series, will be given in the Shaffer Library at 2 p.m., and explore the subject of Lincoln’s campaign for a second term as president. A Civil War soldier’s tent will be displayed on the grounds with an exhibit inside the library.
Musical entertainment will be provided on the library patio.
Two Underground Railroad Trolley tours are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tour leaders explore the plight of escaping slaves and the involvement of Salem-area residents through images and discussion.
Reservations are encouraged but walk-ups are welcome if space available. The cost for the 80-minute tour is $10. Call 330-337-6733 for reservations.
An education trustee will share old-work artifacts with children in Freedom Hall. Included in the demonstrations will be the work of the blacksmith who made necessary items for the early Salem resident.
The historical society’s gift shops will be open at Shaffer Library on South Lundy Avenue and off the garden alongside East Pershing Street.
