Staff report
SALEM
The Salem Historical Society, 208 S. Broadway, offers the following activities in conjunction with the Family Fall Fun Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Unless otherwise noted, the activities will take place at the historical society.
Several activities are being planned around the theme of the featured exhibit, “Ted Enders’ Gallery of Wildlife Mounts.” Someone will discuss the 50 animals and birds on display.
Patrons have the opportunity to have a photo taken with a favorite animal or free face-painting by the students of Heather Connor of United High School Honors Art Class. These events will be held in the Schell House on East Pershing Avenue with entrance through the Garden Gift Shop.
President Abraham Lincoln (aka Jim Crouse) and Civil War soldier (aka John Gilbert, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans) will continue their series of commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The third annual presentation will be given in the Shaffer Library at 2 p.m.
This year’s theme will include campaigning for the president’s second term. A Civil War soldier’s tent will be displayed on the grounds with an exhibit inside the Shaffer Library.
Music will be provided on the Shaffer Library patio. Featured will be the restored calliope owned by Greg Oesch. Displayed also will be the Paxson Art Exhibit, which has run for the past three weeks.
Two Underground Railroad Trolley tours are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Passengers will be shown a screening of images to better understand the plight of escaping slaves and the involvement of area residents. Reservations are encouraged but walk-ups are welcome if space is available. The cost for the 80-minute tour is $10. Call 330-337-6733 for reservations.
The education trustee will share old work artifacts with children in Freedom Hall. Included in the demonstrations will be the work of the blacksmith, who made necessary items for the early Salem resident.
The gift shops will be open, one at Shaffer Library on South Lundy Avenue, and the other off the garden along East Pershing Street. Among the items are copies of the Salem Historic District Downtown Walking Tour.
