Fitch grad Mahone leaves YSU football

YOUNGSTOWN

Linebacker Will Mahone, an Austintown Fitch High graduate, has left Youngstown State’s football team. Mahone joined the team in August after playing the previous two seasons at Notre Dame, which suspended him following a June 14 incident in Austintown. He spent 10 days in jail in July after pleading guilty to four misdemeanors. Mahone was not eligible to play this season for the Penguins.

Penguins win another golf tournament

Huntington, W.Va.

The Youngstown State men’s golf team claimed its second straight tournament title winning the Joe Feagnes Marshall Invitational which concluded on Tuesday. The Penguins had a three-round score of 851 (one-under par) while Cincinnati had an 856. YSU’s Bill Gaffney finished second with a four-under par 209, three shots behind Bowling Green’s Jose Narro. D.J. Holub tied two other golfers for third with a three-round total of 211 and Brandon Pluchinsky finished sixth with a total of 212.

Canfield tickets sold

CANFIELD

Pre-game student and adult tickets for Friday’s Canfield at Dover varsity football game are being sold this week through Friday afternoon at the Canfield High athletic office. Student tickets are $4, adult tickets cost $6.

Mercury rout Sky again

Brittney Griner shook off two blows to the face to finish with 19 points, Diana Taurasi added 18 and the Phoenix Mercury made it two straight routs in the WNBA Finals with a 97-68 win over the Chicago Sky on Tuesday night.

Hawks discipline Ferry for racist comments

ATLANTA

The Atlanta Hawks are sticking with general manager Danny Ferry even though the team’s new majority owner wants him fired for racially charged comments about Luol Deng. CEO Steve Koonin on Tuesday said that he made the decision to discipline Ferry but allowed him to keep his job. He did not say what the punishment was, but noted that he relied on a law firm’s three-month investigation of Ferry and him describing Deng as someone who “has a little African in him.” A letter from co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. recommends that Ferry resign or be fired.

US clobbers Slovenia to reach semifinals

Klay Thompson scored 20 points and James Harden had 12 of his 14 in the third quarter after a scoreless first half, helping the U.S. turn a close game into a 119-76 rout of Slovenia on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Basketball World Cup.
