Jury selection is expected to get underway today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in a 2010 shooting case where a passer-by was struck by a stray bullet.
Judge Maureen Sweeney will hear the case against 23-year-old Kshaun Weaver of Oak Street, who faces charges of felonious assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm for the Nov. 28, 2010, shooting of Kenneth Woods Jr., 22 at the time, of West Judson Avenue.
The day of the shooting, police were called to the intersection of East Lucius Avenue and Erie Street about 3:30 p.m. for a report of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Woods slumped over the steering wheel of his car.
Woods was shot in the head and required substantial therapy after he was hospitalized. Assistant Prosecutor Rob Andrews said Woods still suffers some effects from the shooting.
Andrews said there was a large fight between several women at the intersection and someone jumped on a vehicle belonging to one of the women. Woods was driving down the street as he was taking his mother to work when he was shot, Andrews said.
Weaver was not arrested until February 2011, when police received a tip he was on the East Side. When he was spotted, reports said he ran from police and dropped a bag of suspected marijuana as he was running.
He had to be shot in the buttocks with a stun gun to be arrested, police said.
