Bonfire to include Rusyn, Slovak music, food, culture

The second annual Rusyn-Slovak Vatra (bonfire) will be Saturday from 2 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church, 7754 South Ave.

The event, sponsored by the Youngstown-Warren chapter of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society, will include genealogical material, music and our home-made food, including holubki (stuffed cabbage), pirogi with butter and onions, haluski with dumplings, kolbasi with sauerkraut, vinegar cucumber and sweet onion-dill salad, and slanina (bacon cooked over a fire) with onions and tomatoes on rye bread.

Folk musicians Dean Poloka, Tom Katrenich and Co. will perform around the bonfire. There will be a Mass at 6 p.m. at the church.

A large tent will be erected and the event will be held rain or shine. It is handicapped accessible.
