Angels clobber Indians’ Salazar

CLEVELAND

For four innings, Danny Salazar had the Los Angeles Angels under control.

In the fifth, they got loose.

Salazar gave up Kole Calhoun’s two-run homer and David Freese’s three-run shot during a six-run fifth, and the Angels rolled to a 12-3 win over the Indians on Monday in the makeup of a game rained out in June.

Salazar (6-7), who threw his first career shutout last week against Detroit, pitched 21 consecutive scoreless innings before the Angels teed off on him in the fifth, collecting six hits and sending 10 batters to the plate.

“You’re going to have days like this,” Salazar said. “Just a bad day for me.”

The Angels have a way of doing that to pitchers. They’ve won five straight, 9 of 11 and 20 of 26. Los Angeles has the best record in the major leagues at 88-55.

Jered Weaver (16-8) became the AL’s first 16-game winner as the Angels made the most of being diverted to Cleveland for a few hours during their 10-game road trip.

Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer and Howie Kendrick went deep in the ninth for Los Angeles, which matched its best record in club history through 143 games.

Weaver allowed three runs and six hits in six innings, improving to 7-1 in 11 career starts at Progressive Field.

Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-run homer and had an RBI single as the Indians, who swept the White Sox over the weekend, had their winning streak stopped at four. Cleveland opens a three-game series with Minnesota tonight before heading to Detroit for a key series with the Tigers.
