Penguin soccer team rallies to tie Purdue

YOUNGSTOWN

Sophomore Tyesha Kizer scored her first goal of the season and senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky (Canfield) posted 10 saves as the Youngstown State women’s soccer team came back to tie Purdue, 1-1, Sunday, at Farmers National Bank Field.

With the Penguins (3-2-1) trailing 1-0 at the half, Kizer grabbed a loose ball in front of the Purdue (4-1-1) penalty box and scored from 20 yards out with 42:58 left in the match. Podolsky, who faced 31 total shots, recorded seven of her 10 saves in the second half, but none was bigger than her stop of a Maddy Williams penalty kick in the 62nd minute.

YSU women golfers 5th at Bucknell Invitational

Lewisburg, Pa.

The Youngstown State women’s golf team posted its best score of the three-round Bucknell Invitational which concluded on Sunday. The Penguins finished fifth out of 14 teams with a three-round total of 951 that featured a 309 final round. YSU had rounds of 318 and 324 on Saturday.

Seton Hall won with a score of 899 and Rutgers was second at 905.

Leading the way for the Penguins was Aislynn Merling who placed 11th with a score of 77-82-72—231. Emily Dixon tied for 18th with a 78-82-75—235.

Meram scores twice, Crew beat Chivas USA

COLUMBUS

Justin Meram scored the first two goals and Bernardo Anor added a third in the Columbus Crew’s 3-0 victory over Chivas USA on Sunday.

Meram opened the scoring for the Crew (9-9-9) in the 52nd minute, curling a strike around goalkeeper Dan Kennedy into the bottom-right corner. He scored again 7 minutes later after he intercepted a careless cross in the middle of the Chivas USA (6-15-6) backfield. From there, Meram took it himself and scored from just outside the box.

Anor scored in the 80th minute on a header off Hector Jimenez’s cross. The victory moved the Crew into a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference.

Dupree, Griner lead Mercury rout of Sky

PHOENIX

Brittney Griner swatted away just about everything within reach, setting a playoff record with eight blocked shots, five in the first quarter, and the Phoenix Mercury soared past the Chicago Sky 83-62 on Sunday in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals.

Griner, the WNBA defensive player of the year, also had 12 points and seven rebounds. Candice Dupree made her first 10 shots and scored 26 for the Mercury in their 19th consecutive home victory. Diana Taurasi added 19 points and 11 assists.

Turkey’s late 3-pointers stun Australia, 65-64

Turkey forward Emir Preldzic made his second of two last-minute 3-pointers only 5 seconds from the finish to stun Australia 65-64 at the Basketball World Cup on Sunday, sending the reigning silver medalists into the quarterfinals.

In other round of 16 games Sunday, Lithuania beat New Zealand, 76-71, behind 22 points by Jonas Valanciunas; Neto scored 21 points as Brazil routed Argentina, 85-65; and Serbia guard Bogdan Bogdanovic made four 3-pointers and scored 21 points to help eliminate Greece 90-72.
