h 9/11 museum has items from raid

NEW YORK

The shirt a Navy SEAL wore in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and a special coin given to a CIA officer who played a key role in finding him are being displayed at the Sept. 11 museum, adding potent symbols of the terrorist attacks’ aftermath days before their anniversary.

The items went on view Sunday at the ground zero museum, where leaders see them as an important and moving addition to a collection that often uses personal artifacts to explore the events and impact of 9/11.

“The death of Osama bin Laden is a huge part of the history, and we have an absolute obligation to tell it,” National Sept. 11 Memorial Museum President Joe Daniels said Saturday. The display, he said, “allows millions of visitors the chance to recognize the extraordinary bravery of the men and women who sacrifice so much for this country at home and abroad.”

The shirt and coin will join a display with a brick from the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where the terrorist at the helm of the attacks was killed.

US gas prices fall

CAMARILLO, Calif.

A national survey says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped 2 cents over the last two weeks, to $3.46, bringing the decline to 25 cents over the last 11 weeks.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that falling crude oil prices drove the declines, although the drop was more moderate than earlier this summer. If crude prices don’t rise, Lundberg says prices at the pump may fall more as refiners shift to winter-grade gasoline, which costs less to produce.

Thyroid, kidney cancers rise in kids

CHICAGO

Children’s kidney and thyroid cancers have increased in recent years, and though the diseases are rare, experts wonder if the rising rates could be related to obesity.

The rate for all childhood cancers combined, 171 cases per million children, remained stable from 2000 to 2009 although slight increases were seen in blacks and adolescents, according to a report from researchers at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During the years studied, there were about 120,000 new cancer diagnoses among infants and children age 1 through 19.

Study co-author Dr. David Siegel emphasized that the increases were relatively small and that children’s overall risks for developing cancer are low.

Norbert weakens off coast of Mexico

LOS CABOS, Mexico

Hurricane Norbert slumped to tropical storm force off of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula Sunday after pounding fishing villages and damaging more than 1,000 homes while kicking up dangerous surf farther north along the California coast.

Norbert peaked as a Category 3 hurricane early Saturday with sustained winds of 120 mph, but by Sunday afternoon it was a rapidly weakening tropical storm with winds of 50 mph.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm was likely to fade as it bends toward the coast of the peninsula by midweek.
